What is Dussehra

Dussehra, as an important festival of the India, has several stories related to it. All these stories have a common theme which clearly states that Dussehra marks the victory of the good over the evil. It has stories related to it from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

The Origin of Dussehra

The festival of Dussehra draws its origination from the great Hindu epic Ramayana which says that the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Lord Rama killed the 10 headed Ravana, since Ravana had kidnapped Lord Rama’s wife Sita. Lord Rama was escorted by his brother Lakshman and admirer Hanuman with an army who went all the way to Lanka to fight Ravana and bring back Sita. Lord Rama finally killed Ravana and won over the evil. To celebrate this day, Vijayadashmi or Dussehra is celebrated.

The story goes that Ravana had kidnapped Lord Rama‘s wife Sita and taken her to his kingdom of Lanka. Lord Rama, along with his brother Lakshmana and an army, fought a great battle against Ravana and his army of demons. After a tenday war, Lord Rama emerged victorious and freed Sita from Ravana‘s captivity.

Dussehra is celebrated with great pomp and show in all parts of India. In some parts of the country, effigies of Ravana, Meghnath, and Kumbhakarna are burnt on the day of Dussehra. In other parts, people perform Ramleela, a play that depicts the story of Lord Rama.

Dussehra is a very important festival for Hindus and is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm.
